Kerala is believed to be a gift of the Arabian Sea. The name Kerala is widely explained as the "the land of coconuts", derived from Malayalam word "kera" which means coconut.  As mentioned earlier, history of Kerala can be traced back to 4000 B.C. History is, "a story or record of important events that happened to a person or nation, usually with an explanation of causes and effects".  Ancient Period refers to the time before the Christian era, when Proto Australoid and Negrito race inhabited the land.

Kerala was known to the ancient Phoenicians as a coast from which fabulous spices and commodities like Sandalwood, Ivory, Teakwood etc, such as pepper, cardamom and ginger, were exported to many countries of the west. Kerala held a considerable position in the commercial map of the ancient world. Megalithic monuments like various kinds of burial stones and urns and some man-made underground chambers have also been found.

According to Traditional Malayali legend proclaims that Kerala arose from the sea, when the sage Parasurama threw his axe northwards into the waves after sitting in penance at Kanyakumari. You might take it as a poet's dream. But, the geologists have pointed out that the elevation of Kerala from the sea was indeed a result of some seismic activity, either sudden or gradual. The history of Kerala is unanimous.
